چکیده

There has recently been considerable interest in design of low-complexity, myopic, distributed and stable scheduling policies for constrained queueing network models that arise in the context of emerging communication networks. Here, we consider two representative models. One, a model for the collection of wireless nodes communicating through a shared medium, that represents randomly varying number of packets in the queues at the nodes of networks. Two, a buffered circuit switched network model for an optical core of future Internet, to capture the randomness in calls or flows present in the network. The maximum weight scheduling policy proposed by Tassiulas and Ephremide [32] leads to a myopic and stable policy for the packet-level wireless network model. But computationally it is very expensive (NP-hard) and centralized. It is not applicable to the buffered circuit switched network due to the requirement of non-premption of the calls in the service. As the main contribution of this paper, we present a stable scheduling algorithm for both of these models. The algorithm is myopic, distributed and performs few logical operations at each node per unit time. 1. Introduction. The primary task of a communication network architect is to provision as well as utilize network resources efficiently to satisfy the demands imposed on it. The main algorithmic problem is that of allocating or scheduling resources among various entities or data units, e.g. packets, flows, that are contending to access them. In recent years, the question of designing a simple, myopic, distributed and high-performance (aka stable) scheduling algorithm has received considerable interest in the context of emerging communication network models. Two such models that we consider this paper are that of a wireless network and a buffered circuit switched network.

A hybrid GRASP algorithm for minimizing total weighted resource tardiness penalty costs in scheduling of project networks

In this paper, we consider scheduling of project networks under minimization of total weighted resource tardiness penalty costs. In this problem, we assume constrained resources are renewable and limited to very costly machines and tools which are also used in other projects and are not accessible in all periods of time of a project. In other words, there is a dictated ready date as well as a d...

A simple and effective scheduling mechanism using minimized cycle round robin

packet and cell switched networks. We demonstrate that MCRR exhibits optimal worst-case latency property in a certain class of weighted round robin (WRR) approaches which are currently used for packet (cell) scheduling in high-speed networks, such as ATM networks. We further present a Hierarchical MCRR (HMCRR) mechanism to maximize the efficacy of MCRR in practice and be scalable to large numbe...

Pre-order Deficit Round Robin: a new scheduling algorithm for packet-switched networks

In recent years, many packet fair queueing algorithms have been proposed to approximate generalized processor sharing (GPS). Most of them provide a low end-to-end delay bound and ensure that all connections share the link in a fair manner. However, scalability and simplicity are two signi®cant issues in practice. De®cit Round Robin (DRR) requires only O(1) work to process a packet and is simple...

End-to-end performance analysis with traffic aggregation

The provisioning of end-to-end services in presence of traffic aggregation is evaluated in the framework of the Differentiated Services QoS architecture. The effect of stream multiplexing on delay and jitter-sensitive traffic is analyzed through an experimental approach. Aggregation is evaluated in three different scenarios: with different aggregate traffic loads, with a variable number of flow...
